I didn't have access to any modeling - so that didn't help. But here's the figures:

my proposal (30% of MATWE for single, 90% of this for couples)

: $16,863/year full single pension
15,176.70/year for couples

current: (25% MATWE single pension rate)

$14,614/year full single pension
$12,207/year each couples

hypothetical 90% of single rate for couples: $13,153.14

On the basis of these figures, I believed that that the couples rate was way too low... Having tried living on a pension myself, the figure of around $12,207 seemed preposterous.

On the other hand, perhaps I have gone too far the other way...My formulation seems to favour couples more the COTA estimates.

On the other hand, I think that each INDIVIDUAL pensioner deserves autonomy as far as is possible.

And $15,176.70 is not really that much in the big picture. Perhaps COTA's suggestion for couples would be better?; ie: $14,636.70...

The Council on the Ageing is calling for a full single pension at 35% of Male Total Average Weekly Earnings. The rate for singles would be $375.30 per week, and for couples $562.95.

The singles this would amount to $19,515.60, and the for couples: $14636.70

Anyway - I'll consider this - and maybe revise my estimates.... Take care - and feel welcome to comment further - here - or elsewhere on the site...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6920488656220463337.post-32951090063786290852009-02-16T22:11:00.000+11:002009-02-16T22:11:00.000+11:00How did you come to the rate of 90% of the single ...How did you come to the rate of 90% of the single rate for couples? Is there data on the financial benefit of coupling available?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
